Dr. Edryn J. Coleman brings the perspective of a classroom teacher, the ear of a conductor, and a commitment to making meaningful music accessible.
Since 1998, his teaching career has spanned elementary classrooms, secondary ensembles, and university music education. He has taught choir and piano at Oakland Mills High School since 2017 and has been a faculty member teaching choral methods at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County since 2019.
As a guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and author, he connects the daily work of teaching with the possibilities of the concert stage.
His guest-conducting work has taken him to all-state choirs in California, Texas, Kentucky, Delaware, and Tennessee, as well as university festivals and regional honor ensembles. His recent engagements include Carnegie Hall and Fresno State University’s Sound Off Tenor-Bass Festival in 2026.
Alongside his work with singers, he helps strengthen the profession through service and leadership. He has served as Membership Chair for ACDA’s Eastern Region since 2024, following terms as President of the Maryland Choral Educators Association (2021–2023) and the Pennsylvania Collegiate Choral Association (2015–2017).
With Marques L. A. Garrett, Coleman compiled and edited Accessible and Beautiful: Repertoire for Mixed Voices to Encourage Connection and Growth, published by Oxford University Press in 2025. His writing also appears in Choral Journal, where he has reflected on accessible repertoire and the lasting value of the choral community.
His Coleman Framework brings reflection, belonging, musicianship, connection, and legacy into a shared approach to music teaching. These ideas connect his work in classrooms, rehearsals, professional-learning sessions, and on the concert stage.
